Community Action Projects
Community Action Projects (CAPs) are the experiential component of the program. Our Leadership Thunder Bay participants work in “whole-brain” teams to complete projects that will influence our city in unique ways. The goal is to build core leadership skills such as project management, innovation, and problem-solving, as well as courage, empathy, and authenticity through collaboration with organizations. This process exposes the participants to consensus building, public/private partnerships, diversity, board development, fundraising, and volunteerism, among others. The projects should positively impact the community and involve bringing together various organizational sectors including public, private and voluntary, to join forces and explore opportunities. Teams choose their CAPS in October and work on them for the duration of the program and present the results at the graduation ceremonies.

2020 Age-Friendly Snow Angels
Leadership Thunder Bay in partnership with Age-Friendly Thunder Bay worked towards strengthening the Age-Friendly Snow Angels program reducing the barriers low-income seniors face during the winter months. This project helped secure a donation to equip volunteers with shovels, hats, and mitts and helped to deliver resources to help reduce social isolation during COVID-19. The project also helped to recruit over 100 new volunteers and support both clients and volunteers throughout the winter season.

2017 I Have A Voice Project
Leadership Thunder Bay in partnership with Thunder Bay Drug Strategy and Thunder Bay Crime Prevention Council developed a Community Action Project as an experiential civic leadership opportunity for emerging leaders in our community to become more aware of significant social issues that Thunder Bay faces. It will promote the development of leadership skills for the 2017 Leadership Thunder Bay CAP through networking with community leaders, with community members, and through creative opportunities to raise awareness about youth homelessness. The ultimate goal of this project was to provide a platform for youth (13-24) impacted by homelessness to have a voice to share their experiences, their hopes for the future and to raise awareness to youth homelessness in Canada and Thunder Bay. This project not only helped to share the experiences of those impacted by homelessness but the project resulted in a photo-calendar that raised over $5,000 in support of Shelter House.
